Champions Visit

Niamh Mallon, Maria McNally, Nicola Braniff, Jennie Fowler and Colleen Clarke returned to their old school, St Columba’s College, on Tuesday 16th September 2014 bringing with them the Kay Mills Cup.  The girls were part of the Down Junior Team that beat Laois 1.12 – 1.08 in the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Premier Junior Camogie Final in Croke Park last Sunday.  The cup was last won by Down 23 years ago.  This time around the girls were making amends for two previous final defeats in 2011 and 2012 – no pressure then!!

The packed assembly hall was abuzz with excitement as the girls shared their gutsy determination to make this third appearance in a final in four years the success that it turned out to be.  Centre staged in Croke Park was no starry eyed affair for a team that had been to headquarters before and had tested defeat.  In an extremely tight and tense encounter the girls dug deep and battled hard to overcome a talented Laois team that would have been worthy champions but for the sheer effort and team work of the Down stars.  What a win!  What an achievement!

St Columba’s College wishes our past pupils Niamh, Maria, Nicola, Jennie, Colleen and all the squad many congratulations on this splendid victory – enjoy the celebrations!
