Camogs Claim Ulster Title Once Again!

On the 19th November 2014, St. Columba’s U16 Camogs were faced with a challenge. They were to play an Ulster final against St.Malachy’s Castlewellen. The girls knew it was going to be a tough game compared to all the rest but were ready for what was coming their way.  All the camogs knew from past experience that St. Malachy’s were fierce.

The day had arrived for the girls to show their true abilities. The first whistle was blown and into the mid-field line which stood Erin Hagan, Frances Toner and Lauren Craft. St.Malachy’s won the ball and started the scores with one point.  We then got a free which was scored by Erin Hagan.  Nevertheless, this still wasn’t enough!  With 20 minutes gone in the first half, St.Malachy’s had a score line of 1-06, but with another two frees from Erin Hagan and Frances Toner brought the half time score to St.Malachy’s 1-06 to 0-03.

The half time talk made the girls realise how much this Ulster Final meant to them. St. Columba’s knew they had to go out with determination and so they did!  It was like a brand new team had been set out. They all knew that they were not playing as themselves.

It took St. Columba’s two wides before they scored their first goal from a 45 free, which was scored by Erin Hagan.  The girls were then fired up, but St.Malachy’s came back and scored another two goals.  With a strong backline, featuring Maeve Sands, Niamh Lavery, Jenny Toner and Megan Toner, this was all they let pass them.  It was 15 minutes into the second half and Amy Clarke scored another goal, and straight after a free was given to Claire Donaldson. Even though she had miss-hit the ball Claire had still managed to score a phenomenal goal.  Next Amy Clarke, Ann-Marie Smyth and Lauren Craft scored four points all together.  Things were looking good for the Camogs.  The game was getting tense and both teams were looking for scores.  Erin Hagan claimed the last two scores of the match, scoring another two points.  The final whistle had blown with a final score-line of 3-06 to 3-10 to St. Columba’s, and the girls had found themselves crowned Ulster Champs again after five years! They had once again claimed the Ulster title.
