Accelerated Reader Awards Ceremony

16th Dec 2014
Accelerated Reader Awards Ceremony

'Celebrating Success' was the order of the day, on Tuesday 16th December, for all of our Key Stage 3 pupils. Filled with anticipation, they all gathered in the assembly hall, hoping that they would be one of the lucky recipients of the vast array of Accelerated Reader certificates and prizes displayed at the front of the stage.

The Accelerated Reader Programme is basically an individualised, computerised, reading programme for Years 8, 9 and 10. This year, one of our key Literacy aims in the school is to encourage pupils to read for at least half hour each day, in order to improve their reading age, so that they can access all areas of the curriculum more successfully. Back in September, Mrs Gallagher had set specific reading targets for each individual pupil and those who achieved or in some cases surpassed their targets were presented, by Mr Breen, with the appropriate certificates and prizes.

Finally, one of the highlights of the ceremony was when Mr Breen presented Peter Galt with a special trophy and certificate, for becoming the first 'Word Millionaire' in St Columba's College, having read one million words. The challenge is now on to find our second ' Word Millionaire’! Already, one girl in Year 9 is almost three quarters of the way to achieving this goal. Can she be beaten?
